Florida Environmental Advocates to Join Thousands in Washington DC for an EPA Protest
Washington, DC, September 20, 2022 - Thousands from around the country will descend on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) headquarters in Washington, D.C., to demand increased action for environmental contamination that has sickened children, families, wildlife, and the environment across the nation.
At 9:00 a.m. on September 20, 2022, childhood awareness day, advocates will meet at Freedom Plaza and march a few blocks to the EPA headquarters.
Fight for Zero will join SAFE (Scientists, activists, and Families for Safe Environments) in Washington, D.C., and Executive Director, Stel Bailey, will speak on the consequences of inaction by agencies meant to defend natural resources and why it's time to reinvent environmental protection.
"The agency must take a proactive approach to regulate chemicals that polluters lobby against. We see this endless cycle of harmful substances being mass-produced and contaminating the water, soil, and air where they are manufactured and used. As far back as the 40s, there was mass-produced radium, land saturated with the powerful pesticide DDT, Hexavalent Chromium found in drinking water, entire towns covered in coal ash, and PFAS chemicals contaminating the globe. Polluted sites consume neighborhoods throughout America, impacting health and shortening life spans. Our children are the most susceptible to environmental exposure. With cancer being the nation's second leading cause of death in the United States, it's time to take proactive measures to protect their health and future." - Stel Bailey.
We will be joined by advocates impacted by the Santa Susana Field Lab cleanup, Department of Defense pollution, firefighter occupational exposures, childhood cancer, toxic emissions, BP oil spill, Duke Energy's coal ash, jet fuel in drinking water, and contamination from the aerospace industry. Additionally, academics, scientists, industry whistleblowers, doctors, and well-known leaders are expected to be present.
The Safer EPA protest is the first time environmental health advocates from across the country are coming together in one place to unite their voices on the unreasonable risks that chemical pollution poses to human health.
